It's generally a bad thing to promote, publicize and lend credibility to unsubstantiated rumors.

The other problem is the collateral damage. I'd like to know how the story developed, too. I find the journalistic ethics and bias aspects of this interesting as well as political dirty tricks. But if the story isn't true and there's an investigation, Polier will be further harmed. If the story is true, then she's fair game, but if she did nothing, then it would be wrong to monica her. The other problem is that, if untrue, this has already taken up way too much of the public's attention.

If legitimate media continue a discrete investigation, if such a thing is possible, I think that would be beneficial.
