The difference now is that instead of the country being ruled by a despotic tyrant with French/Russian companies modernizing the oil industry, it's going to become an American puppet govt. with US cos. modernizing the oil industry instead.

Puppet government? It would seem they are pulling our strings lately, more than we are pulling theirs... And isn't that how life goes for most of humanity, a intertwine dance of marinettes pulling each other's strings and trying to become the "puppet master"?

Only the most cynical person could assert that what is occurring in Iraq is the formation of a "puppet" government. If anything, the US and CPA are acting as referee so that as many competing interests within Iraq are given a means to express themselves non-violently.

All sides are jockeying for dominant power in Iraq, including the French/Russians, via the UN and probably other avenues. And all sides are trying to promote themselves as being the best solution for overcoming Iraq's situation.

All I care about is that the oil production goes online and returns Iraq to being a self-sustaining economic and political entity. One that spends its time promoting the welfare and progress of its citizenry, rather than being manipulated for the brutal and evil intentions of a despot.

But since you seem to regret that Saddam wan't overthrown based upon humanitarian grounds, I guess you have to ask yourself where (and many others) were when we sat back and watched Saddam brutalize the Kurds and Shiites after the first war?
