Intel's CEO Craig Barrett made the announcement during his keynote address at the Intel Developers Forum in San Francisco.

The Xeon with 64-bit extensions will ship in Q2 of this year. Prescott with 64-bit extensions will ship in the second half of 2004, and Potomac with the 64-bit extensions will ship in 2005.

"It is the worst kept secret in San Francisco history," said Barrett, confirming the rumors that had been circulating in the industry over the last few weeks.

Barrett said the ecosystem now exists for the company to release the 64-bit technology, with Microsoft planning to release operating system support this year.
