I came across a radio program last night with Thomas Lippman talking about his book, "Inside the Mirage" and answering questions.

I haven't really read up on the history of Saudi Arabia, but from what he was saying, it is clear that the country has undergone more profound changes in the last 50 years than any other country on earth as a result of US involvement and guidance in construction of their oil industry.

It's the usual irrational Communist/anti-American hatred that sees anything done by the US in negative terms, just because there is a mutual profit behind decisions and actions.

I haven't seen Lippman's book nor searched for other hits on SI but will probably at least browse it next time I'm in a Borders. It sounded a lot more balanced than the majority of political mudslinging tainted stereotypes one generally gets.
