So the UN was our puppet then but not now.

The UN was and is a convenient cover and scapegoat...depends on what direction the political winds are blowing. Want to protect an ally of convenience from a UN resolution condemning it for acts that violate the Geneva convention? Pressure its members to avoid a vote or veto it alltogether. Want to invade that same country a few years later? Pretend to defend the UN's honor and call it irrelevant at the same time (note the contradiction), and if that doesn't work, show the world that it is by circumventing its will. You can do almost anything when you spend more on defense than the ROW combined. Who's gonna argue with you?
