Yes, it is red. There are 5 red Rioja grapes varities and also rose and white. This grapes, of course comes from La Rioja region of Spain which is 4 hours north of Madrid. I guess Rioja has smoothness of Melot, flavor of Cab and fruitiness of Zin -g-. Everyone has a different taste bud.... but I liked it.
