(Adds details)

MADRID, Feb 18 (Reuters) - Spanish oil firm Repsol (Madrid:REP.MC - News) said on Wednesday Mexico had awarded it a site to build a liquefied natural gas regasification plant in the port of Lazaro Cardenas and the initial investment would be $350 million.

Repsol said the plant would begin operating in 2008 and would have an initial capacity of more than four billion cubic metres a year with potential for expansion to 10 billion cubic metres per year.

Lazaro Cardenas is the only port on Mexico's Pacific coast equipped with facilities to access the national grid of gas pipelines, Repsol said.

The company said the Mexican project was part of its strategy of profitable growth in its liquefied natural gas operations.
