It would appear that "Median Net Worth per Household" in Australia is indeed twice that of America.

Median Household Net Worth in America was $71,600 in 2001.

Median Household Net Worth in Australia is AUD $186,500 or $149,200 in US Dollars at current exchange rates.

$149,200 is slightly more than double $71,600. I am too lazy to look up the most recent number for the U.S.

AUD $203,000 or, $162,400 Assets
AUD $ 17,000 or, $ 13,600 Debts
AUD $186,500 or, $149,200 Net Assets

Household Consumer Debt in the US is 18,700.
And this excludes mortgage and Home Equity loans which are enormous in comparison with Australia. Payments for mortgage debt currently consumes 6% of Household Disposable Income in Australia.
