Becker talks about the causa sui project, I believe starting from Freud's use of the term in connection with the Oedipal conflict. I'm not thinking of it in terms of the will. A google search for the term will get you some info and literature, and even brings up a study guide on Becker's book I think. Let me take a stab at Freud. Causa sui is what enables us to separate from the status of dependence on our parents. In order to function separately, and develop our own egos and personalities, he thought we must supplant our parents (Father) by asserting ourselves as the cause of ourselves, in ego or psychological terms. Otherwise we would rely on our parents for all our decisions, etc., and never become our own person. Indeed, I believe it is what one calls whatever mechanism we use to posit our ego-existence in the universe. Becker thinks the psychoanalytic school and body of thought supplied this function for Freud; it was his causa sui project to sustain his personal genius in the face of a disappointingly weak father. A question, then, is on what do we stand to be the cause (causa sui) of ourselves.
