I'm not sure you could call it desertion- wandering away, getting special privileges to disappear, not being seen....

If anyone knew he was being allowed to skate, then technically it wasn't desertion- merely special privileges. I would guess, with his connections, that some strings got pulled, and the guy who let him out of his minimal duties is either dead, so can't fess up to what he did, or he doesn't want to fess up. But there is always the possibility that Bush was a big enough idiot to skate, thinking no one would notice- in which case he made a very, very bad decision.

(of course there should be a copy of these written orders in his dd214 (and everyone but special ops would have written orders)- and Bush really ought to produce that. Even if Bush did not keep his copy, the defense department should have a copy)
