Karen,

A lot of arguments for same sex marriage/civil unions ignore the concept of dependency. It may be passe to discuss that topic, but in traditional marriage, the concept of union produces children and many women were dependent on their husbands income. Traditional marriage produced dependents and had real dependencies.

This still exists.

This is why we have child support, alimony, survivors benefits etc. This was all assumed even when the marriage produced no children etc

The difficulty is going to be crafting a workable civil union that does not infringe on traditional families and potentially to permit some civil unions to take on traditional benefits if they involve dependent relationships (and dependents).

In the process do we take away benefits from dink's (double-income no kids)?

John
