There is nothing to suggest that are occupation of Iraq is temporary. Most people are saying at least 5 years.

5 years would be temporary.

I guess I will have to define what I mean by fighting. I don't just mean winning a skirmish or battle but ridding the land of the insurgents.

If ridding the land of the enemy is winning then they aren't winning either.

While we may be successful in face to face combat, the insurgents abilities, technology and strength are growing.

I don't think they are. They may have acquired a few more weapons or developed a few new techniques but they aren't really gaining strength or popularity.

They are wearing protective gear because they are fearful of sniper attacks and roadside bombs.

That's a different type of protective gear. And while I wouldn't want to wear either MOPP gear or a helmet and flack jacket during the heat of the day in the summer in the desert, I'd much rather wear the helmet and flack jacket. In the early stages of the war we were more concerned about chemical attacks and we had more prolonged fights but still American soldiers and marines handled the heat. I'm sure it wasn't fun or easy but they are very capable.
