OK. But are the rates at the same ages the same?

Yeah, there are few, if any diseases confined strictly to smokers. BUT correlations can be established between the rates of occurence of some diseases and the length of time a person has smoked. And those rates can be compared to a population that has not smoked. And the rates come out higher.

Now correlation is not causation. But a partial causation trail can be established by the fact that chemicals occurring in smoke interfere with metabolic reactions in the body. That interference, given long enough, can lead to disease.
