True, but which part is the norm - arranged marriage or tossing hot oil? I doubt the oil tossing is a norm, rich families would retaliate - I know I'd kill the groom myself if it were my daughter.


Its normal enough that it got the attention of Dateline or 60 Minutes. You say you would kill the groom but according to people familiar with the situation, the bride's parents blame her and not him. They feel she was not attentive enough, or loving enough or beautiful enough. Often times, she is treated like a leper.

You do know that in many countries having a daughter is considered a curse. In fact, with countries like China where the # of children one may have is restricted, its believed many daughters are put to death at birth.

In India, a daughter is not desired because of the booty a father has to come up with to get her married.
