Srexely, can we say it's unfair for the top 1% to pay 36% of the taxes, unless we know what percentage of the income they make? Or do you think that we should tax on a per-person basis rather than taxing on an income basis?
Also, are you talking about federal income taxes, or are you including payroll taxes, sales taxes, state taxes, property taxes, gasoline taxes, etc.?
The question of fairness in taxes is a complex one, both in terms of philosophy of progressive vs regressive taxes, and in terms of piercing through the nominal rates to find out what percentages people are actually paying. I think, but am not sure, that the highest real rates are paid by the upper middle class wage earners, and not by the very wealthy. |
