Ted Re... would prefer that we work to find alternative fuels and use conservation measures in order to wean ourselves off oil.
While I can and do believe in this somewhat, weaning ourselves off of ME oil won't do anything to resolve the clash of cultures. The simple fact is we are going to have to wean ourselves off of ME oil, within 50 yrs, whether we like it or not. Certainly, if the occupations in Afghanistan, and Iraq go badly, then we will have to resort to it sooner than later.
I think we should have started seriously ten years ago.....or 20 years ago. It feels like we play at being energy efficient.
I further believe that this dependency is what has gotten us to this point in Iraq. Dependencies always lead to trouble for both people and nations. And I believe our current position [in Iraq] is very untenable and very unwinnable
Unwinnable is a word for losers and defeatists; and in our case, would have serious ramifications; which is probably why, that attitude is so repulsive to most american people.
You're in denial.....Americans are not invincible. We can lose just like everyone else; particularly when we jump into things without the proper forethought.
However the French are used to it, so they embrace the philosophy Personally, I think the Islamic fundamentalist concept, of returning to their roots, is absolutely unwinnable. The old arab traditions are unsustainable, and can't provide for the necessities in a modern world. Lets not kid ourselves, it doesn't even take nuclear weapons for a small modern army to devastate any of the arab nations. All it takes is for the US to want to be as ruthless as Saddam; if we just wanted to suppress the opposition, and grab the oil. Rebuilding a country takes far more patience, and perseverance
Isn't that what the Brits and French tried before us? Its not likely that imperialism will work in a modern world. |
