OK. Genetics does get into this. It undoubtedly affects what cigarretes do to you to. I was born with unusually large lung capacity (although a normal size chest; I'm not sure which organs got screwed for that :-), and was able to do serious hiking even when smoking a couple packs a day.

So the immediate effects of smoking were less on me than many people. Long term, we shall see.

I'm sure the same thing happens with alcohol. Some people are born with unusually large or efficient livers and can drink like fish and get away with it. Other people would die in days or weeks at the same rate.
