Temporary is six months. Five years........you need to start looking for a house.

Its still temporary. It wouldn't be temporary if it was planned that we would occupy forever (or since nothing last forever for the foreseeable future).

You never appreciate my down home humor! <g>

Also while I can easily believe 5 years or longer for a US military presence there I wouldn't say the occupation would continue for as long as the military presence. We are the occupying power when we control the country with our military. We aren't the occupying power if Iraq has a government that can make its own decisions even if that government is backed up by the US army. We occupied Germany after WWII. We still have soldiers in Germany, but we haven't been an occupying power there for a long time.

My feeling is the war goes on until we have less than 20k troops stationed there. Frankly, I don't see the current insurgency stopping for at least a year, and that's assuming civil war doesn't break out. Remember the Kurds are also Sunni.

Even the army commanders based over there are saying the level of sophistication of the insurgents and their equipment is improving. In fact, the raid on two Iraqi police stations this past week was well orchestrated using a military style of attack.

People get more sophisticated with practice, but while the sophistication is going up I don't think their numbers and public support are going up. And I doubt they would even attempt an attack like that at the police station against a US Army or Marine position. They have been mainly attacking soft (unprotected civilian) targets with an occasional medium (Iraqi police, very small groups of American soldiers, or an equivalently difficult target). There smart enough not to try frontal assaults on American units. Actually it might be better if they where stupid enough to do that. We would have more casualties in the short run but we would really start reducing the enemy's numbers.

Frankly, I don't think anyone knows who they are and how far they can advance in their sophistication. The info we are getting out of Iraq is confused......either because they don't have a clue or because of political reasons. What I do know is that the longer it goes, the more likely it will be that others are pulled into the conflict.

Why do you keep trying to mitigate what's going on over in Iraq? The situation is anything but good.

I'm not saying its nice and happy. I keep reacting to your overstatement of how difficult the situation is.

Its disturbing that you think I am overstating the situation. I am not saying all is bad but the situation definitely is not good.......that's based on the news plus talking to people who were over there serving. The fact that Bush avoids talking about Iraq suggests how bad things really are. Usually, its Bremer that makes a statement.......occasionally, a cabinet member....rarely, the president.
