Hoya and Ulvac to invest US$60 million in new South Korea sites, says paper

Two Japanese TFT LCD component suppliers have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea related to investing a total of US$60 million in the province, according to the South Korea-based Ang Joong Ilbo.
The companies reportedly plan to invest in the Poseung Industrial Complex for Foreign-Invested Enterprises. Hoya, the world’s largest maker of large-size photomasks for LCD panels, will invest US$40 million while Ulvac, a TFT LCD and PDP component provider, will invest US$20 million. Ulvac will begin construction of a new plant before June 2005, the paper added.
In February 2003, LG.Philips LCD decided on Paju, Gyeonggi Province as the site for what may be the world’s largest TFT LCD plant.
A delegation comprised of representatives from South Korea’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy (MOCIE); the Gyeonggi Province regional office of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU); and LG.Philips LCD, Samsung Electronics and other companies is in talks with other TFT LCD-related companies from Japan such as Fujifilm and Sumitomo Chemical, the paper added. |
