U.S. JAN CPI UP 0.5% VS 0.3% EXPECTED
U.S. JAN. CPI GAIN LARGEST SINCE FEB. 2003

January CPI rose a stronger than expected 0.5%. This was caused largely by a big 4.7% jump in energy prices, but the core rate of CPI was up 0.2%. That was above the 0.1% expectation, and above the 0.1% gain in December and no change in November. There were gains of 0.2% in July and October of last year, so this is not exactly breaking new ground, but it is higher than trend.
