Let me try to explain Mel's actions Vis his father. Honor your father and mother. 10 commandments. It's not something nice persons do to boost their self-esteem. It is a non-negotiable demand from the sovereign God of the universe.

Mel obviously takes this seriously and is trying to find a way to honor this commitment in the context of everything else he believes and is going through right now. I respect him more for doing this precisely BECAUSE his father is making it so hard on him.

I say he is ATTEMPTING to honor this commitment. It is literally impossible to do. That is why the subject of his movie had to go through all that he endured. Mel believes that if he fails to honor his father, he is literally driving another nail into Jesus' flesh.

And BTW, a grandparent of the actress who paid Mary actually spent time in a Nazi concentration camp. I doubt she would be involved with a holocaust denier.
