In Tradestation I plot charts comparing an ETF with its underlying index; you can do similar research using Yahoo's charts, or stockcharts.com, I am sure.

I only trade a few ETF's off daily charts; some I trade off weekly charts (energy related for one example). I too have to deal with volume as an issue since I also trade Canadian ETF's, most of which have quite low volume.
