Mel obviously takes this seriously and is trying to find a way to honor this commitment

Well, I wouldn't say it's obvious, obviously <g>, but your explanation is plausible. The reservation I have about it is that I thought that honoring one's parents meant loving and respecting them. Which implies protecting them in their dotage, not following them headlong off a cliff out of obedience. But I guess different people can interpret that differently and maybe Mel is doing what you say. I can also see where he might find sustenance in righteous suffering over this film. I was a Catholic long enough to understand that.

I doubt she would be involved with a holocaust denier.

I don't conclude anything about Mel's opinions from his father's opinions. They certainly provide smoke, though, for those who are predisposed to be offended by the movie. But I have no horse in this race. I just posted it because the thread seems interested in the flap surrounding the movie.

I'm not a moviegoer and I don't expect to see this one. I was just checking the TV schedule for the weekend and discover that one of the networks is running Castaway, which I have yet to see. <g>
