Marriage, although it has legal, religious and moral consequences, is, in fact, an invention of society. It has changed dramatically over the centuries in terms of its parameters and legal ramifications. It's different in different cultures. So what makes some of you say that you KNOW what marriage is for everyone and for all time?

You can talk about what you "think" it "ought" to be and give your reasons why, but that's a policy decision, not a black and white "my way or the highway" choice grounded in some greater truth.

The problem for the homophobic crowd is that they cannot draw any reasonable connection between allowing homosexual couples the right to marry on the one hand, and harm to the institution of heterosexual marriage on the other. Resorting to "history" or "bible" or "moral" arguments always leads full circle back to the emotional repugnance they have for homosexual relationships.

In those instances where people choose to engage in private activities that satisfy their needs and impact us little, if at all, we should just butt out. No pun intended.
