Well, let's say you have children and raise them responsibly. You have given them the ability, by their presence in the world, to do both good and evil. When they are adults, are you responsible if they choose to harm others? You knew when you had them that they might make bad choices. Maybe you are even responsible for the pain and suffering they experience in life because you brought them into the world, knowing they would be hurt. Using your gun example, if possible I would bring force to bear and remove the possibility of people to exercise their will to shoot others. I would call for help, appeal to their reason, take the guns from them. But I am still not responsible for them shooting each other. They are. But to what degree do we want to give up our free will? In this country we prefer as much freedom as we can manage, and suffer many ill effects of peoples' bad choices. If the alternative is a god stepping in and pre-empting our free will, I can't conceive of that kind of world.
