Saturn - Intel does not have to have a barn burner, just 'good enough'. They have the potent Xeon and Intel brands.

But clearly this is a big win for AMD, since it almost certainly means a big shift in 64 bit development to the X86-64 platform.

I have said before that I doubt this will have a big impact on Intel revenues, and that they would announce X86-64 when the pressure got high enough to justify the damage to Itanium. I did not expect it this early, though, since clearly the Itanium transition story is not fully baked.

It is almost certain now that AMD will be a significant player in volume servers, somewhere they were never able to go before. The fact that the impact on Intel is not significant is good news for Intel, but the AMD opportunity is still big - for AMD.
