(Nasdaq: GERN) exploded $7 1/2 higher to $14 after announcing late yesterday that it had successfully cloned the gene for the human telomerase catalytic protein. The absence of this protein in later years of life means death for cells -- being able to supply the protein will mean just the opposite. The protein may also have a far-reaching impact on cancer therapies, as it addresses the uncontrolled division of cells, which is how cancer gets out of control and is the reason why blunt-force chemotherapy is used to treat cancer.
