Back in the 50s when i was growing up in the bronx, the irish kids used to yell "Guns for the Arabs, sneakers for the Jews." It was a pretty cutting remark to a jewish kid who was more embarrassed about the Holocaust than revulsed by it. After all all the movies and actual footage showed the Jews marching quietly to their death. I have gotten over this as i came to realize what overwhelming force in the hands of butchers could do to the hopeless captives. And of course there were plenty of instances of bravery from Anne Frank to the Warsaw ghetto uprising but once caught and trapped like a rat, there was little to do except to die. Sorry for the digression. Getting back to those irish kides--many of them are now drinking buddies and talk openly of their predudices they learned sometimes from parents and sometimes unfortunately in their church. And all of us look to Pope John 23 as our personal hero. MOst folks forget him now.
Anyway we all got over it and here in the US i have every faith that we will get over this movie too. For europe, i have my doubts. At least there is israel for them to go to now and i hope if some come here they will be welcomed and not turned away as the boatloads were by the FDR administration to meet certain death. Sorry for the rant but the bulk of what Etzioni says is true and i worry along with him and i also hope he is wrong. Mike
PS If jews start leaving europe for israel under pressure of anti-semites, what do you think their goverments will do when the arabs start complaining about the new influx of jewish population. After all israel was largely allowed to be created because the europeans didnt want to deal with their displaced jews.
