52pc say dump Bush: poll From correspondents in Washington 22feb04 FIFTY-two per cent of registered US voters do not want US President George W. Bush to be re-elected to a second term in office, while 43 per cent do, according to an opinion poll released today.
The Newsweek magazine survey found 38 per cent of registered voters thought Bush was "somewhat likely" to be re-elected this year, while 31 per cent said that outcome was "very likely".
At the same time, only 48 per cent of Americans polled approved of the way Bush was handling the job of president, the same as one week ago.
In the wake of the controversy over the president's service in the National Guard at the time of the Vietnam War, 49 per cent of those surveyed said they were inclined to believe that Bush fulfilled his obligations, while 33 per cent had serious doubts.
Fifty-eight per cent said they believed Bush was an honest person by nature, while 34 per cent did not see him that way.
Meanwhile, 68 per cent of respondents said American jobs and foreign competition would be very important in determining their vote for president this year.
When asked which presidential candidate would do the best job of protecting American jobs and creating new ones, regardless of the candidate they supported, 35 per cent of those polled chose Bush, 31 per cent preferred Democratic Massachusetts Senator John Kerry and 18 per cent North Carolina Senator John Edwards, another Democrat. |
