John Re....You freaking idiot. "Keeping them clean", hell, the problem is making them WORK. It's like Henry Ford saying we can't mass produce the car because their are not any car washes. If it were up to you we would have waited to invent windows until we had invented Windex!

I really don't understand what you are getting your undies in a bunch about. Solar panels are hardly 100% maintenance free. And they need to be cleaned occasionally, especially in dirty environments.

Photo-cells have been around since 1950 (although the first solar-cell seems to have been made by Charles Fritts of New York in 1883) and many people will be familiar with them powering battery-less calculators (the small dark grey window somewhere on the front of the calculator). PV devices, in the form of solar panels made up of many solar cells, are very cost-effective because their fuel is free, they have no moving parts and are low-maintenance, so require very little upkeep apart from occasional surface cleaning. Once purchased they should have a life of at least twenty years.

You will note the article states, the panels are low maintenance, except they need to be cleaned occasionally. If they are on the roof, as you suggest, and a lot actually are, they are difficult to clean occasionally. OTOH, You can leave them dirty, and you can expect to lose 20-30% of the panels efficiency. Whatever blows your socks off.

PS How about... wait a minute, I think I have an idea... you climb onto the roof with a freaking hose!!! Oh my God, can I patent that technology breakthrough?

Getting desperate for a technology breakthrough you can patent, I see. However I would advise you, that if you look at the insides of your toilet, you probably would come up with a better patentable idea. For me, I will just go for the nuke, so I don't have to worry about cleaning my panels on the roof. Happy cleaning.
