tejek,

re:But more importantly, you never know where is a good place to build.

Now there we can agree 100%, even those places where we have built huge structures we learn decades later that the area is earthquake country, but the frequency is so low we just never thought about it at all. In places like CA or Kobe you know what your in for, so you take steps ahead of time.

I don't think the engineering problem is that difficult, it's the political and disposal issues I see stopping them even today.

re:I would fight like hell if they tried to build a new one in WA state.

It would have to come with 100% dam removal and river system restoration before I'd support it in WA. Other states would have other reasons like coal burning plants creating green house gases, etc. Now if we used nuclear to generate hydrogen to power cars to cut our oil dependency we might have more support nationally.

re:I am surprised at your comments given that you lived in CA for a while

And never saw any serious damage to buildings I lived or worked in, some of them over 60 years old. Obviously other structures throughout the state didn't always do so well. But CA has some very old buildings that have survived direct hits for decades. I've worked in hardened structures meant to withstand nearly direct nuclear attack, so earthquakes are not an issue if designed with a big budget, not the lowest bidder.
