Rumsfeld's arrival at the airport in Shannon, a frequent refueling stop for transatlantic military flights, was wildly cheered by soldiers from the Oklahoma Army National Guard on their way to a one-year deployment in Iraq.

The troops were waiting at the airport for a flight to Kuwait when their commander learned that the secretary of defense had just landed.

As Rumsfeld, wearing a gray Army jacket, entered the airport lounge, whoops and applause erupted. Beaming like a Hollywood celebrity, he shook scores of hands, posed for snapshots and stood on a chair to give an impromptu pep talk.
