I think Bush went to war because he decided it was in the best long-term strategic interests of the US to control Iraq.

Iraq was a very weakened state with a universally abhorred dictator. It is also very well situated.

So, we got us some Grade A real estate in the middle east on the cheap. Permanent military bases, so we don't have to beg the Arabs for permission anymore.

The WMD story was just a facade to hide the real reason, it would not have been politically feasible to tell the truth.
