It's up to the option holder.

For example, I am short the BBTK Aug 10 calls. The stock closed at 10. I won't know until tomorrow if I will loose my stock. Even if the stock had closed at 9 1/2, it could still get called away (at 10).

I always excersise my options when they are close to the strike, but I am suprised how often people don't. I was 3/8 in the money once (on covered calls) and did not get called. Some people don't want to pay the commission I guess.

I was short lots of WNDR options this month both put and calls. I rolled 21 of the Aug 17 1/2 calls to the Sept 20s. But I am still short 11. I expect to get called out of 1100 shares tomorrow.
