I know our military is run by ordinary Americans like me who don't have an evil wish to hold innocent peasants prisoner. So I trust them
Great. Then would you say that, since the same well-meaning, kind-hearted, ordinary Americans run the rest of the country as well, you don't any laws whatsoever to protect your rights?
You don't have to lose all faith in your fellow countrymen to insist that they follow due process. Laws are there for a reason. And if you have signed on them, you are bound by them. Whether that is convenient or not is irrelevant. So is your opinion on trustworthiness of "ordinary Americans".
Which, by the way, is the funniest "argument" I have heard to date on why US should not be respecting Geneva Convention. Because US military is run by ordinary, trustworthy Americans. Right.
I'm sure you will be happy to hear that the military has made preparations for military tribunals
Better late than never.
I think it is a major mistake to accept the premise that we will forego trying to interrogate terrorists because they were captured on what is generally thought of as a battlefield rather than in a city
"What is generally thought of as a battlefield"??? Hello? Would it help to remind you that we are talking about Afghanistan, a country flat out INVADED by US military???
So, yes, it was "generally thought of as a battlefield", LOL.
Thus your reply to my conclusion should have Yes, depending on where the terrorist was captured
Not really, because a person can be a number of things at once - architect, thief, senator, for example. And than that thief can be fighting against an invader and would be a POW. These are not contradictions. And it is the ACTIVITY that counts rather than the PLACE.
And, will you do me a favor and try to refrain from saying "Gitmo"? Thanks. |
