With the roof systems, Eric already addressed some of the problems. If you take them off of the roof, location, space,acces to sun become problems. Endemic to the solar electric panels, is low efficiency,use of rare, and hazardous chemicals, cost of storage, and hazardous wastes, especially when you replace the batteries.

My system had no batteries...anyway all of these issues are not insurmountable. Batteries are recycled and economics are another issue.
