Some recent scientific investigations trace the mythology of the 'Great Flood' to the historical event of the Med bursting through (after Sea levels rose at the end of the last Ice Age) and flooding what was a much smaller fresh water lake... and creating the modern Black Sea.

Early human inhabitants along the (then tropical) shores of the proto-Black Sea would have had to 'high tail it' for higher ground for some months... as the water constantly rose behind them... and as the greatest waterfall on Earth existed for about a year at the Bosphorous.

Survivors might have made their way to Sumer... and told their tales of the 'World flooding' to early Babylonians --- thus giving rise to the Flood story in Gilgamesh, which appeared much later in the Old Testament.
