I've read and heard a number of conspiracy theories about the market, most specifically the presidential race (the Dems have targeted the market for a drop) and few other "left field" reasons why we are selling off right now. Most seem pretty far fetched to this observer.

Exactly how would the Democrats target the market? Launch financial kamikaze selling attacks? You would think that Republicans could out-buy any Democratic selling.

Maybe more relevant is background concerns about Bush's vulnerability. But I guess if that were the case, you'd get a Nader rally.

Maybe people can't accept that sometimes people are more inclined to sell than buy and have to come up with arcane explanations for why.

The small caps are always more vulnerable, both because when the buyers back away it's easy for them to hit air pockets, and because it is easier for people to build more extreme fear around the greater volatility they exhibit when the prices begin to fall.
