re:If well thought out, I suspect a combo of solar, wind farms and hydro could take care of WA state's power needs well into the 21st century.

Maybe at a commercial level, but then we'd have the transmission line issue.

This guy spent $34,000 and generates nearly a third of his own power.

At his rate of savings, my electrical bill is only about $100/month so saving $40 would mean I'd have it paid for in about 70 years, assuming no maint. issues. :-)

Did you compute that on the $34k he paid, or the $17k estimate presented in the article for the average user? Remember this guy has a mini mansion in Bellevue.

When this discussion on energy first started, I said I would like to see more focus on alternative energy sources. The only reason his price was 34k or that even the average price is 17k is because its not being mass produced in quantity. If there are problems that are making production in quantity difficult, then they need to be solved. Design and equipment have to be simplified to minimize installation costs.

Back in the early part of the 20th century, cars were very expensive by income standards back then. It wasn't until Henry Ford came along did a car get affordable for the average person.

My question is why hasn't it happened already?
