Consumer confidence numbers not very good...anyone else starting to get just a wee bit nervous about the economy with emphasis on jobs growth? On CNBC yesterday Mr. Kaminsky stated that in his questioning of various corporate personnel people he has yet to see any inclination to begin to hire. Evidently the incremental return on hiring additional people does not make up for the incremental costs of hiring. Geenspan says the opposite: hiring will begin shortly. On another tack is the guidance provided by many companies. A friend tells me that the majority of earnings reports have been accompanied by upward guidance. Interesting that such guidance is not reported more widely. The discordance between these various economic indicators makes interpretation of the direction of the economy difficult...if not outright impossible...for the "average person". The spin doctors furnish much of the interpretation, and the public accepts which-ever view fits best within their personal prejudices. m1
