I look at the gay marriage issue this way.

As a civil institution...why should anyone object? It seems to me that in a country that is supposed to separate religion and religious biases from civil law, what would be the basis for denial? Legally, there doesn't seem to be any logic to denying, anymore than denying people of color, gender, weight, or whatever, any other "civil" right.

As a religious ceremony....that is entirely up to whatever religious sect that would want to consider or deny it. Religious beliefs are privately held and should be left to the discretion of the believer(s).

Obviously the opportunists and the more closed minded will try to use it as a wedge issue for political gain. Or in the case of Pat Robertson and other supporter based religious enterprises...increase the donation flow of their supporter base.
