Mediacom posts Q4 profit, tests 'lite' broadband

Jeff Baumgartner, CED

Mediacom Communications posted Q4 revenues of $258.8 million, up 8.3 percent, and a profit of $7.1 million (6 cents per share) compared to a net loss of $49 million (41 cents per share) a year ago.

Mediacom, which has been hurt by DBS competition in rural markets, noted that it took "a restrained stance on matching promotional offers" in the quarter, resulting in a loss of 9,000 basic customers but sequential 3.5 percent growth in video revenues, which reached $213.1 million.

On the advanced service front, the company said it make progress with video-on-demand rollouts and expects to launch digital video recorders sometime next month.

The MSO noted that it is also testing a "lite" broadband service that could be marketed on a standalone or bundled basis. Mediacom also plans to hatch a bundling strategy by offering VoIP service in some undisclosed markets in the second half of the year.
