Bush opposes some benefit cuts

President says Social Security cuts should be off limits to retirees and people near that age.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Bush said Wednesday that cuts to Social Security benefits should be off-limits to people who are retired or near retirement.

"My position on Social Security benefits is this: Those benefits should not be changed for people at or near retirement," the president said.

Bush's comments came in response to a question from a reporter after Greenspan said in testimony to a congressional committee that Congress should consider pushing up the retirement age and offering less generous increases in Social Security benefits.

Greenspan also later said he opposed changing benefits for retirees or those near retirement. (For more on Greenspan's comments, click here).
