He's talking about getting the government out of the marriage business. I've been advocating that throughout.

I miss a lot of interesting conversations because I usually am on SI as a followup to something I've posted, replying to responses, and miss most of the exchanges peripheral to that topic. So I don't know what you mean, exactly. If City Hall or whereever doesn't tie the knot that formalizes the contract, and you aren't interested in a religious ceremony, how does the contract get effectuated? And wouldn't government end up being involved in the marriage anyway if the contract ended in an irresolvable disagreement of some sort, as so many marriage contracts do?

Sorry to raise a subject you're probably tired of.
