Bush's story got a lot of traction in 2000 in the Boston Globe, that did the investigation. I'm not sure how much it got in the rest of the country. Bob Dole certainly let people know that he was a wounded WWII vet. But he didn't run on his war-hero status; he didn't claim in gave him special insight into military affairs, or special fitness to hold office. He never to my recollection said or implied that Bill Clinton was unfit to hold office because he lacked military experience. Dole ran primarily on his long experience in the Senate.
