I have read a few reviews of The Passion. Some terms that the critics used to describe its gore:

"The Gospel according to the Marquis de Sade"
"The Jesus Chain Saw Massacre"
"a snuff film"

and reviewing Gibson's oeuvre, one critic concluded that judging by the way Gibson revels in martyrdom and torture in his movies, with himself the victim, you have to conclude that The Passion is for him in some sense, auto-biographical.
