McClellan appointment:

From biocentury.

Sen. Byron Dorgan (D-N.D.) said he will hold up the nomination of FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan to head the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) until McClellan answers questions about his opposition to reimportation of prescription drugs from Canada. A spokesperson for Dorgan told BioCentury that the senator wants to know why McClellan "has been such an advocate of the industry he's supposed to regulate."

FDA's position on reimports is that it cannot ensure the safety of drugs bought from outside the U.S. Last week, the White House announced that President George Bush will nominate McClellan for the top job at CMS, and that the appointment will require Senate confirmation.
