Bob, I understand GERON and how it works just from reading the newspaper articles. In simple terms, basically the Geron guys have identified the "smoking gun" responsible for aging and cancer. Now that they've found the smoking gun, they can go on to identify treatments to inhibit Telomerase which causes widespread growth in practically all cancers.

Aside, from that. In college, I've taken 5 semesters of Chemistry including biochemistry & organic chemistry. I've also taken microbiology. Also add to that, two semesters of a class that covers genetic disorders. No, I'm not a business or financial major. So, I'm kinda like Joe Kernen, I have a lot of science background.

Identifying Telomerase as the smoking gun should make it simple to focus on drugs to block cancer growth. This is how people find treatments for diseases like PKU (phenylketonuria lack of enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase), Maple Syrup Urine Disease (deficiency of leucine, isoleucine, & valine), and yes, AIDS.

In May 1993, Luc Montagnier at the Pasteur Institute in Paris isolated the infectious agent HIV. A drug was quickly developed and 3 years and 10 months later, AZT was approved for experimental use by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Now treating telomerase will not be like fighting the AIDS virus. The AIDS virus mutates itself into different strains to make AZT less usefull in some cases but Telomerase is not a virus and will not mutate.

Hope this helps!
