Not sure about individual stock ownership in Europe. But in EU they have hefty defined benefit pensions (typically 80% of your last salary), and their pension funds are invested in stocks, so the indirect stock ownership of the average European is pretty high. You got to be careful with that 40% stock ownership number for Americans. The median US household has pretty paltry savings outside home equity.
