doesn't vat tax hurt the lower income? the tax is on everything.. I believe even clothes and maybe food. It would seem to me to be proportional unfair tax of lower and middle income. Esp larger families. It also is a great incentive for barter. you will find many people , plumbers, mechanics, accountants, etc trying to hide income to avoid vat tax. vat tax applies to services as i remember. Barter is a serious problem and quite a bit of it goes on.

I highly doubt vat would ever be approved in u.s. I remember discussing it back in early 70's. It seems all it gets are some minority financial , political folks proposing it but no one ever gets behind them. Was Forbes a vat person and talked flat tax as an alternative.
